Syrian General Intelligence Chief Hussein Selame is attending the fourth conference of heads of counter-terrorism agencies from United Nations (UN) member states, which will begin tomorrow in New York.
Syria's presence at the conference, to be held on June 29-30, will be particularly notable on the second day. Hussein Selame will take part in the third session titled 'Global Terrorist Threats Landscape'.
According to the agenda published by the UN, officials from the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, as well as the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and numerous UN officials will also participate in this session.
Damascus's new approach
Selame's participation comes shortly after an event organized three days ago by Syria's diplomatic mission to the UN. The Syrian Permanent Mission to the UN, in cooperation with the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism, organized a side event as part of the 2026 UN Counter-Terrorism Week.
According to Syria's official news agency SANA, the session titled 'From a Lingering Threat to National Leadership: Syria's New Approach in the Fight Against ISIS,' which was also attended by UN and European officials, discussed the transformation in Damascus's strategy against ISIS, the government's role in addressing security threats, and the strengthening of international cooperation in this field.
Increasing activity on the international stage
Hussein Selame's engagements in New York are a continuation of Syria's diplomatic moves in this field. Selame, together with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, had attended the ministerial meeting of the International Coalition Against ISIS held in Riyadh on February 8.
This was recorded as Syria's first participation since the coalition's founding in 2014, after it joined as the 90th member in November 2025.
