DAMASCUS – According to local sources, the Israeli army continues to expand its military presence in the Daraa countryside in southern Syria. It was reported that new military posts and positions have been established in the area, and Israeli troops are continuing to deploy at various points.
According to information obtained, Israeli troops advanced along the line connecting the towns of Jamla and Saysun, setting up a tent and temporary military position where infantry units are stationed. It was also reported that construction of a new military post has begun in the Tel al-Maghur area near the village of Abidin, west of Daraa.
Local sources stated that the military post in question is still active and that Israeli soldiers maintain their presence in the area.
New Tensions After the 1974 Agreement
Following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government, Israel had increased its activities in the buffer zone under the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement. According to local sources, the Israeli army has established approximately 10 military bases and checkpoints in the Daraa and Quneitra provinces to date.

The agreement signed between Syria and Israel on May 31, 1974, provides for the establishment of a buffer zone between the two sides. The ceasefire in the area is monitored by the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).
Why Are the Golan Heights Strategic?
The Golan Heights, considered Syrian territory under international law, has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. Israel's decision to annex the region in 1981 was declared null and void by the United Nations Security Council.
More than half of the approximately 40,000 residents of the Golan Heights are Syrians of Druze origin, while the remaining population consists of Israeli settlers.
According to military experts, the Golan Heights is of critical strategic importance to Israel due to its high altitude, proximity to Damascus, and its commanding position over the Jordan River Valley and the Galilee region. The area also provides significant advantages in terms of intelligence gathering, early warning systems, and access to water resources.
The recent military activity in southern Syria has once again raised concerns about security balances in the region, while no official statement has been made by the parties on the matter.
