U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was in Washington for the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham, at the White House. The two leaders discussed military support for Ukraine and diplomatic avenues during the closed-door meeting that lasted about an hour.
Following the meeting, Zelenskyy said on social media, 'We had a productive meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.' The Ukrainian leader added, 'I thank him for everything we have done together to protect Ukrainians' lives and advance peace.'
Zelenskyy stated that he first offered condolences for the late Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as 'a true friend of Ukraine.' The Ukrainian president said, 'We discussed with President Trump licenses for the production of Patriot missiles and some other proposals that could be beneficial. We also addressed diplomacy. Reviving the diplomatic process is of great importance.'
Ukrainian media had reported that an aerial ceasefire proposal to be presented to the Russian side was also expected to be discussed during the meeting. This claim has not yet been officially confirmed.
Immediately after his meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Both leaders are expected to attend the funeral service for Lindsey Graham at the Washington National Cathedral later in the day.
