U.S. President Donald Trump praised Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as a “young, handsome guy” while recounting how the Gulf state gave the United States a Boeing 747 that now serves as a presidential plane.
Speaking at a rally at the airport in Bullhead City, Arizona, on Oct. 14, ahead of the Nov. 3 congressional midterm elections, Trump said: “So I called up the head of Qatar, highly respected guy, a great guy, young, handsome guy, actually. It’s great to be young, handsome and have plenty of cash.”
“I asked to borrow it”
Trump said the United States had been waiting years for new presidential aircraft and that the current planes are 35 years old. He said he asked Tamim to borrow Qatar’s 747 to use as Air Force One for a while, and that the emir replied, “You may have it.”

Trump also defended accepting the gift. “When you’re given gifts, you take ’em, right?” he said. “When they give you a 747 you say two words: ‘thank you.’” The jet, in its new paint scheme, flew low over the airport as the rally began.
Trump accepted the plane last year despite strong criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.
