US President Donald Trump held a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. According to the Saudi official news agency SPA, the conversation addressed negotiations with Iran and the security of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
The two leaders emphasized the need to support efforts to achieve security and stability in the wake of rising tensions in the region. They also discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Contacts continue at ministerial level
Alongside this high-level contact, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also held a phone call. According to SPA, the two ministers reaffirmed the importance of maintaining joint coordination and consultation to strengthen regional security and stability.
These diplomatic efforts come at a time when war fears have escalated following attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and US airstrikes on Iranian targets last week. The Tehran administration responded with missile and drone attacks that it said targeted US military bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan in retaliation for the strikes.
Delegation from Qatar to Iran
As part of efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region, Saudi Arabia and Qatar also agreed in a phone call two days ago to continue joint work and coordination to prevent escalation and limit the negative impacts of the crisis.
US President Trump, for his part, announced on Friday that he had approved new negotiations with Iran and that the ceasefire in effect since April had ended. Meanwhile, a Qatari delegation arrived in Iran on Friday to keep diplomatic channels open.
