U.S. President Donald Trump did not rule out possible U.S. action against Iran. Asked whether Washington might take action in connection with the midterm elections scheduled for November 3, Trump said, "We could do that, we’ll see."
Trump also assessed Iran’s economic and military situation. Arguing that Tehran was "in very bad shape," Trump claimed that Iran’s military power had been defeated and that the country had neither a navy nor an air force. He said inflation in Iran had reached 300 percent.
Trump provided no details on what action the U.S. administration might take against Iran or when it might occur, leaving the nature and timing of any possible action unclear.
Iran conflict disrupts shipping in the Strait of Hormuz
The United States and Israel began a war against Iran on February 28. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks, and the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed after the fighting began.

The war, which has continued for more than seven months, has largely halted commercial oil shipping through the strategic waterway. This has led to higher global energy prices.
Agreement signed in June was not implemented
The United States and Iran signed a framework agreement in June following mediation efforts by Pakistan and Qatar, with the aim of ending the fighting and paving the way for the start of negotiations.
Implementation of the agreement stalled, particularly because of disagreements over security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
