The White House announced that the “Lindsey O. Graham 2026 Russia and Iran Sanctions Act,” signed by U.S. President Trump and containing sanctions provisions targeting Russia and Iran, has entered into force.
New sanctions provisions for Russia and Iran
The measure provides for sanctions against senior members of the Russian government, oligarchs and state-owned companies. The law also clears the way for tariffs to be imposed on countries that purchase the largest amounts of Russian crude oil and natural gas.
The law also provides for expanding the scope of existing sanctions against Iran.
Law passes Congress
Republican and Democratic senators in the United States united around the bill, whose preparation was led by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, known for his support of Israel. Graham died suddenly on July 11.
The Senate approved the bill on August 7. The House of Representatives also passed the measure on September 17 and sent it to Trump for his signature.
