Modernization and capacity expansion work is continuing at Türkiye’s border gates connecting it with Syria. Construction or project activities are ongoing at nine customs gates under projects carried out by the Ministry of Trade, with the aim of making regional trade and transport faster, more efficient and safer.
As efforts related to Syria’s reconstruction and regional stability have intensified following the change of regime in the country, infrastructure investments at Türkiye’s gates along the Syrian border are also continuing.
Customs gates on the Syrian border are being expanded
Thirty-three percent of the work at the Yayladağı Customs Gate had been completed during the first seven months of the year. The project plans to expand the existing 17-decare site to 23 decares and increase the number of platforms from two to four.
To expand the Akçakale Customs Gate, a 24-decare mine-contaminated area belonging to the Ministry of National Defence was cleared. Approximately 59 decares of land belonging to the Turkish Grain Board were allocated to the Ministry of Trade, while planning work is being carried out to modernize the gate over a larger area.
Planning and project preparations for the construction of a service building at the Öncüpınar Customs Gate are continuing. Work is underway to expand the existing 21-decare site in Çobanbey to 71 decares and the 15-decare site in Karkamış to 90 decares. A process has also begun for the construction of permanent service buildings in Karkamış.
Infrastructure and superstructure work has been completed at the Nusaybin Customs Gate, which serves as an inland customs gate. The Nusaybin Customs Gate is expected to begin operations if a customs gate opens in Syria’s Qamishli region.
Gürbulak has been redesigned
The Gürbulak Customs Gate, which reopened in April after its modernization was completed, was arranged to serve with 20 platforms. The site was expanded to 320 decares, while the number of vehicle-scanning X-ray devices was increased to four.
Eleven inspection platforms were installed at Gürbulak to process customs and passenger procedures more quickly and safely. A separate inspection point was also built for goods subject to inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Project work at other gates
Work is continuing to modernize the Yayladağı Customs Gate in Hatay and the Üzümlü Customs Gate in Hakkari. Activities to increase the capacity of the Derecik Customs Gate are planned to begin by the end of the year.
Work is continuing on modernization projects for the Dereköy, Cilvegözü, Öncüpınar and Akçakale customs gates. Project preparations are also ongoing at the Çobanbey and Karkamış customs gates.
Trade and transport traffic is expected to increase with the opening of the Zangezur Corridor, while land surveys are being conducted to increase the capacity of the Dilucu Customs Gate in Iğdır. Talks with Iran are also continuing to determine the site where the Gelincik Customs Gate will be established.
