A group of 12 countries including Türkiye and Pakistan called for joint action “in the immediate term” to limit use of the UN Security Council veto “in specific circumstances, such as, but not limited to, mass atrocities and war crimes.”
In a joint statement issued after the Uniting for Consensus group met on September 24 during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly, members said they ultimately favor abolishing the veto altogether.
The group also reiterated its opposition to creating new permanent seats, proposing instead to expand elected membership, including longer-term rotating seats, to address the underrepresentation of Africa and other regions.
Members are Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Italy, Malta, Mexico, Pakistan, South Korea, San Marino, Spain and Türkiye. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had also called for the veto mechanism to be scrapped in his General Assembly speech.
