Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the United States and Iran to return to dialogue to end their war, raising the issue during a closed-door meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on September 24, according to Xinhua.
Xi said China has always believed that “the sovereignty and security of all countries should be respected.” He backed a return by Washington and Tehran to the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad and said he hoped the two sides would settle their differences through negotiations as soon as possible, reach a comprehensive agreement that includes the nuclear issue, and achieve peace.
The June 18 deal, brokered with the help of Pakistan and Qatar after talks in Islamabad, gave the two sides a framework and 60 days to negotiate a longer-term agreement to end the war.
On Taiwan, Xi told Washington to “adhere to the correct position of opposing ‘Taiwan independence’” and to handle the issue “prudently,” saying Beijing’s position on national unity and territorial integrity is “crystal clear.”
Trump described the talks as a “great meeting.” Xi’s three-day trip is his first state visit to the United States in more than a decade, and the two countries agreed during the visit to extend their trade truce until January 2027.
