Two men named Yaghoub Karimpour and Nasser Bekrzadeh were executed in Iran on charges of spying for Israel and collaborating with Mossad. After the Supreme Court approved the death sentences, the two prisoners were hanged at Urmia Central Prison. Karimpour was a law graduate from Miandoab and belonged to the Yarsan religious minority. Bekrzadeh was known as a 26-year-old Kurdish political prisoner.
These executions, which took place in a fragile ceasefire environment following the conflicts that began in February 2026 in Iran, indicate a period of increased executions in the country. The human rights organization Hengaw stated that both prisoners were tortured and deprived of fair trial processes. It was emphasized that Bekrzadeh's death sentence was approved in a rapid process and the trial was not transparent.
Volker Turk, the United Nations Human Rights Chief, announced that at least 21 people have been executed in Iran since February and more than 4,000 people have been arrested on national security charges. Turk stated that the rights of the Iranian people are being taken away with harsh methods alongside the effects of the conflict.
These developments in Iran continue to cause concern in the international human rights community.
