The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Miami in December.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation while speaking to journalists in New York after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Rubio said resolving international problems requires communication even with countries and leaders with whom there are major disagreements.
He explained that Putin’s participation in the G20 summit would give him an opportunity to engage not only with U.S. President Donald Trump but also with other world leaders.

The U.S. secretary of state added that Washington hopes the Russian president will accept the invitation to attend the summit.
Possible meeting between Trump and Putin

Rubio said there was still no confirmed plan for a separate meeting between Trump and Putin during the G20 summit.
At the same time, he stressed that Washington remains open to communication with Moscow, noting that Putin’s participation in the summit could provide an opportunity for direct talks between the two presidents.

Rubio stressed that any high-level meeting should aim to achieve tangible results, which requires prior work and preparation.
The announcement came after Rubio and Lavrov met in New York, where they discussed the Russia-Ukraine war and relations between the United States and Russia.
Russia remains a member of the G20, while the Kremlin has not yet officially announced whether Putin will accept the U.S. invitation.
