US officials speaking to the US-based news site Axios claimed that Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at least two missiles at two commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The officials reported that the ships sustained serious damage but no casualties occurred.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed a report from the area. The statement said that a tanker was hit by unidentified munitions near the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz and a fire broke out on board. UKMTO did not provide information on the source of the attack.
Axios suggested that the US might carry out military retaliation against Iranian targets in the region following the attack.
The attack took place shortly after the expiration of a one-week agreement between the US and Iran aimed at halting attacks in the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Tehran has not yet issued an official statement on the claims. However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced on his social media account that negotiations for a final agreement would not begin as long as threats from the US continue. Araghchi stated that the Iranian people and military are not affected by threats.
