Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAJA) announced that transportation was halted as a result of an attack on the railway line between Tehran and Mashhad in the early hours of Thursday, July 9. The agency reported that the disruption was caused by a "criminal attack by the American-Zionist enemy."
Technical teams were dispatched to the damaged area and emergency repair work began. RAJA officials stated that efforts are underway to restore service on the line as soon as possible.
Vehicles from Iran's bus fleet were allocated for passengers stranded due to the railway disruption. Arrangements were made to transport passengers to the holy city of Mashhad by road.
In its statement, RAJA noted that the congestion on the line was due to funeral ceremonies held in Mashhad. It was stated that millions of people from across Iran and internationally had come to the city for the funeral and burial ceremonies of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
The railway attack was recorded as part of a wider series of US strikes on Iran that same day. In one of the attacks, US forces launched a cruise missile at the vicinity of the Ak Tekeh Khan Bridge in Golestan province. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that there were no casualties in this attack.
Earlier in the day, US strikes had targeted some areas in southern Iran, hitting civilian infrastructure and killing one person.
