The lifting of the relevant designation for Syria has brought into focus the goal of establishing a new relationship between the United States and Syria based on shared interests, mutual security and shared prosperity. The US Embassy in Syria said the decision was an important step in the country’s transition from international isolation to partnership.
The statement said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced that the designation was officially lifted. It said the aim was for Syria to cease being a source of terrorism and become a committed partner in combating terrorism.
Investment and trade targeted for reconstruction
The lifting of the designation aims to clear the way for investment and trade during Syria’s reconstruction. The statement said capital could replace conflict, projects could replace isolation, and trade could replace chaos.
The US Embassy in Syria stressed that the decision was not limited to lifting the relevant designation. The statement described the step as one of the cornerstones of a new relationship between the two countries, to be built around shared interests, mutual security and shared prosperity.
Call for lasting peace and prosperity in Syria
Referring to US President Donald Trump’s approach of “security first, prosperity next,” the statement said Syria had been given an opportunity. It said turning this opportunity into lasting peace and prosperity would depend on the process ahead.
The statement from the US Embassy in Syria said: “Promises made were kept, and commitments were fulfilled. Syria has been given an opportunity. What must be done now is to turn this opportunity into lasting peace and prosperity.”
