The Trump administration's new plan to sell munitions to Israel has reignited debate over the highly destructive bombs used in Gaza. The Washington Post reported that the package being prepared will be worth a total of $2.8 billion.
The package includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 bombs. Each bomb weighs approximately 1 ton, and the sale could be one of the largest single munitions deals prepared in recent years.

Penetrator warheads also included in the package
The U.S. administration is also expected to approve the sale of 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator armor-piercing warheads as part of the same package. Israel has repeatedly used MK-84 bombs in Gaza, and they have a highly destructive impact.
An informal notification has been sent to Congress regarding the sale, while the formal notification is expected to follow shortly. The deal would pose a significant test for Democrats.
U.S. official declines to comment on the deal
An unnamed U.S. official said that all foreign arms sales are subject to existing procedures. The official said they do not comment on deals that have not yet been finalized.
In 2025, the Trump administration also approved a $2.04 billion arms sale to Israel, bypassing direct congressional review. The decision sparked debate among Democrats and Republicans.
