Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took aim at French President Emmanuel Macron in a post on Monday, after Macron linked the high fuel prices behind France’s protests to the war in the Persian Gulf in his address to the nation.
“Mr. Macron made his bed when he assured the US President that he welcomes atrocities against Iranians,” Araghchi wrote, adding that it was “too late to blame the war his ilk helped cause.”
“Listen to the future of France”
Araghchi said the French people are demanding sweeping change, including freedom of assembly, and ended his post: “Listen to the future of France, Mr. President.”

What Macron said
In his Sunday evening address, Macron said protesters’ concerns over the cost of living and fuel prices stemmed from the conflict in the Gulf, in which France took no part. He announced a trip to the Gulf states to secure energy supplies and vowed that those behind the looting and vandalism would be held accountable.
Araghchi’s remarks come amid continuing tension between Tehran and Western capitals since the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran began on Feb. 28, 2026. France has said it did not take part in the initial strikes, and Macron said in March that France’s role in defending regional partners was strictly defensive.
Protests against the cost of living turned into looting and arson in several French cities on Saturday. The Interior Ministry said 2,397 people were arrested and 997 police officers and gendarmes were injured, while Macron rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s resignation.
