In a statement on the second anniversary of Yahya Sinwar’s death, Hamas claimed that Sinwar had launched a new phase in the confrontation with Israel.
The movement said the phase of open confrontation it claims Sinwar initiated continues to have an impact on the region and has created a new political landscape.
Hamas presents Sinwar’s final moments as a symbol of resistance
Hamas claimed that footage released by the Israeli army showing the wounded Sinwar throwing a stick at a drone demonstrated his “resistance until his last breath.”
Saying Sinwar’s killing did not end the resistance, Hamas described his death as a new source of struggle. The movement also said Sinwar had become a symbol of fighting against seemingly impossible odds.

Timeline of the clash in Rafah
On Oct. 17, 2024, the Israeli army announced that three Hamas members had been killed in a clash in the southern Gaza Strip. According to the army, DNA testing determined that one of those killed was Sinwar.
A day later, Hamas commemorated Sinwar in a statement and said he had been killed while fighting Israeli soldiers. In its anniversary statement, Hamas gave the date of Sinwar’s death as Oct. 16, 2024.
Sinwar’s political and organizational background
Yahya Sinwar was born on Oct. 19, 1962, in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip; his family had been displaced from the town of Majdal in 1948.

Sinwar studied Arabic at the Islamic University of Gaza and took part in student activities. He contributed to the founding of Majd, known as Hamas’s first security unit.
Arrested by Israel in 1988, Sinwar was sentenced to four life terms. After spending 23 years in Israeli prisons, he was released in a prisoner exchange in 2011.
Sinwar was elected head of Hamas in Gaza in 2017. In August 2024, he succeeded Ismail Haniyeh as head of Hamas’s political bureau and was killed in Rafah about two months later.
Israel describes Sinwar as the planner of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on settlements and military bases around Gaza. Many Israelis were killed and taken captive in the attack carried out by Palestinian groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
