The Ottawa government said it would work to increase economic pressure on Iran and maintain international coordination against Tehran’s activities in the region.
In a joint statement by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, Iran was urged to immediately end its “destabilizing activities” in the Middle East.
Joint efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz
The statement criticized threats against vessels seeking to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear activities and its support for regional proxy groups.
Canada is maintaining close cooperation with its G7 partners to support US-led efforts, alongside France and the United Kingdom, to reopen the strait.
492 Iranian individuals and entities under sanctions
Canada continues to support the US-led “Operation Economic Outcast” maximum pressure sanctions campaign and other initiatives aimed at disrupting Iran’s ability to “finance terrorist activities.”
According to Ottawa’s statement, Canada has sanctioned 492 Iranian individuals and entities since 2010 under the Special Economic Measures Act and the Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act.
The ministers said they would continue seeking additional measures with international partners to compel Iran to end its “malign behavior.” Iran did not immediately respond to Canada’s accusations.
