A protocol aimed at developing military and security coordination between Algeria and Niger was signed during Nigerien Defense Minister Salifou Mody’s official working visit to Algeria.
Before the signing, the minister delegate to Algeria’s defense minister and Chief of Staff Major General Saïd Chanegriha received Mody, who led the military delegation. Senior commanders of the Algerian army, officials from the Defense Ministry and General Staff, and members of the Nigerien delegation attended the meeting.
Coordination between the armies
Chanegriha said they were ready to consider proposals for military and security cooperation that serve the common interests of the two countries and align with the will of their leaders.
Mody also expressed his satisfaction with the level of multidimensional coordination between the Nigerien and Algerian armies.
In recent months, the two countries have increased cooperation in the political, diplomatic, military and economic fields. The protocol follows earlier tensions in relations.
Military and energy support for Niger
Algeria’s Defense Ministry had announced that four Russian-made Su-30 fighter jets were sent to Niamey, the capital of Niger, at the end of August. The ministry said the aircraft, sent in two sorties, were intended to support the Nigerien army against attempts to destabilize the country.

The ministry said the move was taken in line with instructions from Algeria’s President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdelmadjid Tebboune. It said the decision was aimed particularly at strengthening strategic cooperation between the two countries in the military field.
Algeria also built a 40-megawatt power plant in Niamey. The plant, commissioned in June, was donated to Niger.
Joint work in the oil sector
Energy cooperation between the two countries also includes oil exploration activities in Niger. Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach is working on projects around the Kafra oil field in Niger.
Algeria sent a technical delegation to Niger from October 12 to 19. The delegation, comprising experts from the Ministry of Hydrocarbons, the Hydrocarbon Regulation Authority and Sonatrach, supported efforts to contain a leak at a well in the Agadem oil field in the country’s northeast and reduce its environmental impact.
