The toll from two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela in quick succession is worsening. Health Minister Carlos Alvarado announced that the number of people killed in the earthquakes has risen to 235, with more than 4,300 others injured.
La Guaira hardest hit
Alvarado stated that La Guaira state was the area most affected by the earthquake, saying, "At the moment, we have an adequate stock of medicines and medical supplies, but to manage the intensity, we are shifting our entire logistical network to the La Guaira and Caracas areas."
Urging citizens not to occupy hospitals except for emergencies, the Health Minister said that due to patient density, the setup of field hospitals has begun.
Emergency call for health personnel
Alvarado addressed all health personnel, doctors, nurses, and medical students, stating:
Everyone must proceed to the nearest health center to quickly treat our injured. We have started setting up field hospitals. Our goal is to reduce the burden on hospital buildings and treat non-critical patients there, freeing up operating rooms and intensive care units for those seriously injured in the earthquake.
Request for international aid
Venezuela's Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, and National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez visited La Guaira to conduct inspections.
Speaking in the Macuto area, Rodriguez said they hoped to "rescue as many people as possible" from the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Recalling that La Guaira had been declared a disaster zone, Rodriguez stated they have requested international aid. He noted that the first search and rescue teams from the Dominican Republic were about to land, and that teams from other countries would arrive in the coming hours.
Two major tremors 39 seconds apart
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 occurring in Venezuela 39 seconds apart. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Yumare in Yaracuy state, and a 7.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded 24 kilometers northeast of the city of San Felipe in the same state. The depths of the earthquakes were reported as 10 kilometers near Yumare and 21.9 kilometers near San Felipe.
