Egypt and Qatar called for a complete end to attacks against Saudi Arabia, expressing support for the government in Riyadh. The two countries’ foreign ministers called for joint efforts to be strengthened to prevent further escalation of regional tensions.
Call for a diplomatic solution
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani spoke by phone on Wednesday evening. A statement issued by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday said the talks addressed relations between the two countries and regional developments.
The ministers discussed various areas of cooperation between Egypt and Qatar, including their fraternal ties and high-level reciprocal visits. Abdelatty and Al Thani expressed satisfaction with the level their relations had reached and said they were determined to take cooperation further.
The latest developments in the region were also discussed. The two sides agreed to support initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and preventing the expansion of the conflict, while increasing joint efforts.
Abdelatty and Al Thani condemned the attacks, saying that all hostile actions against Saudi Arabia must end. The two ministers expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and called for the crisis to be resolved through political and diplomatic channels.
Escalation along the Saudi Arabia-Yemen front
The phone call took place as military tensions continued between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen. In recent days, airports and critical facilities in Saudi Arabia have been targeted with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Attacks targeting five airports in Saudi Arabia since October 5 have killed 20 people and injured hundreds, according to the statement. The attacks caused material damage and disrupted air transport.
In Yemen, a military operation called “Yemen Dawn” is ongoing. Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, said the operation aims to retake state institutions from the Houthis and establish control over the capital, Sana’a.

The history of the conflict in Yemen
Military activity in Yemen has continued the escalation that began and expanded in July, following a relative calm created by the ceasefire that began in April. Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting the Yemeni government since March 2015.
The Houthis have also controlled the capital, Sana’a, as well as various provinces of Yemen since September 2014.
