Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan took a joint stance against the military escalation in the region. In a phone call on Monday, the two ministers called for an immediate halt to the tension and for prioritizing political and diplomatic channels.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the call addressed regional developments and efforts to prevent the spread of tension. The ministers emphasized the importance of immediately halting the military escalation and bringing political and diplomatic methods to the forefront in resolving regional crises.
The statement noted that close coordination and consultations between the two countries support regional security and stability, while also protecting the interests of the region's countries and their peoples.
Tension in the region had risen recently. In February, according to figures provided by Tehran, more than 3,000 people died in attacks launched by the US and Israel on Iran; Iran also claimed that there were American and Israeli casualties in its counter-attacks. In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding and began negotiations for a final deal, but the process stalled due to a dispute over navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz. In July, Tehran responded to US attacks on Iran by targeting American military facilities and equipment in Arab countries.
