Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, who received Hans Grundberg, the United Nations special envoy for Yemen, in Cairo, said freedom of navigation must be protected in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

According to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the meeting between Abdelatty and Grundberg addressed developments in Yemen and their implications for regional security. Abdelatty said securing maritime transport in the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb was directly linked to the global economy.
Abdelatty said developments affecting maritime transport in the region were impacting international trade and supply chains, particularly food and energy supplies.
Egypt calls for a comprehensive political solution for Yemen
Reiterating Egypt’s position in support of Yemen’s unity and legitimate national institutions, Abdelatty said the crisis must end through a peaceful solution that would strengthen Yemen’s stability.
The Egyptian foreign minister said stability in Yemen was of great importance both for the security of the Red Sea and for regional security. Abdelatty said Egypt supported all efforts toward a comprehensive political solution that addressed the expectations of the Yemeni people and protected the country’s resources.
Grundberg, meanwhile, assessed the latest developments in Yemen during the meeting and his contacts aimed at containing the crisis and reducing the risk of escalating tensions in the region.
Clashes reported to have intensified again in Yemen
Clashes have again broken out between government forces and the Houthis in several areas, including the Taiz, Lahij, Marib, Al Jawf and Al Bayda governorates.
The clashes were part of the broadest military escalation since the relative calm that followed the April 2022 ceasefire, which began in early July. The fighting, which intensified in September, saw the Houthis take control of several strategically important locations in the Hudaydah and Taiz governorates.
The locations under Houthi control included the strategic city of Al Mokha, while the Houthis advanced as far as Mayyun Island, which overlooks the international Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Background to the Yemen crisis
The Yemen crisis deepened after the Houthis were accused of receiving support from Iran and seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and several governorates in September 2014.
Following these developments, an Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in March 2015 to support the Yemeni government.
