Iran has taken the issue of US restrictions on its aviation sector to the international arena by filing an application with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Abu Zar Shiroudi, head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, said Monday that the complaint had been submitted to ICAO. Shiroudi said Tehran was pursuing legal and diplomatic channels to resume flights on routes that had previously been active and lift the restrictions. He added that documents related to the issue had also been submitted to ICAO as part of the application.
Obstacles to direct flights to Europe
Shiroudi said direct flights from Iran to European countries faced restrictions. Flights operated through regional hubs are therefore being used as alternative routes.
Istanbul is also one of the main regional hubs used for flights between Iran and Europe.
Flights to Iran suspended
In recent days, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates suspended flights arriving from and departing for Iran. The measures followed new US sanctions targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
Talks were held to launch Tehran–Najaf flights between Iran and Iraq and use the route in place of the Tehran–Baghdad route. However, Tehran–Najaf flights were later canceled.
