A delegation from the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority visited Damascus on Sunday to restore air connectivity between Syria and Egypt. The visit focused on resuming direct flights and strengthening civil aviation cooperation between the two countries.
Omar al-Husri, head of Syria’s General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said he held a meeting with the Egyptian delegation in Damascus in remarks carried by Al-Ikhbariya television. Yasser Mohamed Abdel Halim Mohamed, head of the Central Aviation Security Department at the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority, and Egypt’s chargé d’affaires in Damascus, Mohamed al-Faqi, also attended the meeting.
Damascus and Aleppo airports to be inspected
The meeting addressed possible steps to resume direct flights, facilitate passenger movement and revive air transport. These steps are intended to strengthen relations between Syria and Egypt.
The Egyptian delegation is scheduled to conduct field inspections at Damascus and Aleppo international airports during its visit. The inspections will cover aviation security and safety procedures, operational processes, infrastructure, passenger services and technical equipment.
Omar al-Husri said the visit would also include an assessment of recent developments at the two airports. He said Syria was seeking to rebuild and expand its air connectivity network regionally and internationally, adding that Egypt was an important stop on this network because of its historic relations as well as its social and economic ties with Syria.
Technical preparations for direct flights
Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El-Hafny said on July 27 that direct flights between Egypt and Syria would begin “very soon.” El-Hafny said technical talks on resuming the flights were continuing.
Following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, steps were taken toward renewed rapprochement in relations between Egypt and Syria. After approval from the Egyptian authorities, Syrian diplomat Yahya Diab officially began serving as chargé d’affaires of Syria’s mission in Cairo in July.
As of 13:31 GMT, Egyptian authorities had not issued an official statement on the delegation’s visit to Damascus.
