The European Union has opposed attempts to alter Gaza’s demographic or territorial makeup as discussions continue over the future of the Palestinians and the status of the Gaza Strip.
European Commission spokesperson Christian Wigand responded at a daily press briefing to questions about remarks by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir concerning the Palestinians.
Referring to United Nations Security Council Resolution 2735, Wigand said they reject all attempts to alter Gaza’s demographic or territorial makeup. He said all parties should work to reduce tensions rather than exacerbate them.
Wigand said the Gaza Strip should be a united and integral part of the future Palestinian state, together with the West Bank and the Palestinian people, and stressed that the population must not be forcibly displaced. He reiterated that Gaza is an integral part of the future Palestinian state.
Israeli ministers’ remarks on the Gaza plan
Itamar Ben-Gvir had announced that a plan had been prepared to forcibly displace the 1.86 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip over seven years.
Israel Katz had also said that the plan to move Palestinians out of Gaza had not been canceled, but that its implementation was currently suspended.
Katz argued that no real solution had been found for Gaza and said the Migration Authority was ready to implement the plan by sea, air and other means. He also said that Egypt, which shares a land border with the Gaza Strip, opposed the displacement of Palestinians.
