Finland’s defense cooperation agreement with Israel was extended by 10 years in 2024, taking it through 2034. The extension was not announced publicly.
Scope of the agreement
The agreement, which will remain in force under the new term, covers research and development in defense, military equipment procurement and cooperation in the defense industry.
The decision was made as the war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza continued. Finland’s opposition criticized both the long-term expansion of the cooperation and the failure to inform the public about it.
Reaction from Finland’s opposition
Sofia Virta, leader of the Green League, described the government’s decision as “a historic disgrace.” Opposition representatives also criticized the decision as developments in Gaza continued.
Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen, however, argued that extending defense cooperation with Israel was a routine practice.
