Greece and Israel are planning a €3.1 billion project aimed at combining their air defense and unmanned aerial vehicle systems within a joint structure. The agreement is expected to be signed in Tel Aviv on Monday.
The plan centers on integrating the Israeli-made air defense systems with the Patriot system used by Greece. The goal is to enable the systems belonging to the two countries to operate within the same air defense structure.
35-month implementation schedule
The project is expected to be completed within 35 months of the agreement being signed. Greek companies are planned to carry out €700 million worth of work out of the project’s total €3.1 billion value.
Israeli systems under consideration
As part of the project, Athens is considering purchasing the Spider, Barak MX and David’s Sling air defense systems from Israel.
The plan also includes using artificial intelligence technologies to detect threats identified by the air defense systems. The use of artificial intelligence is intended to reduce the Greek armed forces’ expenditures.
