The decision by the Israeli army not to open a criminal investigation into the 2024 World Central Kitchen convoy attack in Gaza, in which seven aid workers were killed, was criticized by Germany.
A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said they were saddened by the announcement made by the Israeli army on August 19, 2026.
Berlin calls for a transparent investigation
The spokesperson said the German government expects Israel to comply with its humanitarian obligations and its responsibilities under international law.
The spokesperson said that investigating violations of international humanitarian law and prosecuting those responsible were among these obligations, and reiterated the call for the competent Israeli authorities to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation.
Three cases to be closed
The Israeli army had previously announced that it would investigate two cases involving suspected war crimes in the Gaza Strip, while closing three high-profile investigations.
The attack on the World Central Kitchen convoy in 2024 was among those three cases. Seven aid workers were killed in the attack.
