Israel and Greece have agreed to establish a multilayered air defense system in Greece for use against aircraft and missiles. The agreement for the approximately €3 billion “Achilles Shield” project was signed in Tel Aviv.
The signing ceremony was held at the Israeli Ministry of Defense complex, with representatives from the defense institutions of both countries in attendance. The agreement is valued at more than 10 billion shekels, equivalent to approximately €3 billion.
Multilayered defense system
The system to be established in Greece will include David’s Sling and Barak MX, produced by Israel Aerospace Industries. These systems will be used against aircraft and missiles.
The package also includes Rafael-produced Spyder systems and MMR multifunctional radars developed by Israel Aerospace Industries. The MMR radars are planned for use in air control.
The parties also decided to develop a new national command-and-control system under Rafael’s leadership.
Drone Dome procurement for strategic facilities
Israel and Greece also signed an additional agreement worth €26 million, or approximately 92 million shekels, to protect strategic facilities against unmanned aerial vehicles.
The additional agreement provides for the procurement of Rafael-produced Drone Dome systems. These systems are expected to strengthen existing defense capabilities and contribute to the protection of strategic facilities.
Technology transfer in cooperation
The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced that defense industry cooperation between the two countries would be expanded to include technology and knowledge transfer.
The ministry described the project as a new phase in defense cooperation between Israel and Greece and called Greece a strategic partner in the Eastern Mediterranean.
