Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis announced that Athens would continue advancing its relations with Israel. Speaking on SKAI on Wednesday, Gerapetritis said international alliances would not be shaped according to the demands of other countries.
Gerapetritis said cooperation with Israel provided Greece with significant benefits, particularly in defense and technology, and that this partnership would be developed further. The minister also maintained that Greece retained the opportunity to hold strategic-level talks with the Arab world.
Tensions with Türkiye and channels for dialogue
Gerapetritis said the deterioration in relations with Türkiye stemmed from Greece’s statements concerning the demilitarized status of some islands near the Turkish coast and threats to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles. He said his country was prepared for every scenario.
Gerapetritis said Athens was determined to defend its national interests using all available means. Asked whether tensions with Türkiye could turn into a crisis, he said they saw no danger on the ground. The Greek minister added that they nevertheless remained on alert at all times.
Gerapetritis also noted that channels of dialogue between the two countries remained open. He maintained that this was demonstrated by Ibrahim Kalin’s most recent visit to Athens.
