Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Garibabadi criticized the IAEA Board of Governors’ decision on Iran’s nuclear file, saying the process was disrupted after the United States and Israel attacked his country’s nuclear facilities.
Garibabadi argued that facilities under IAEA monitoring and safeguards had been attacked, disrupting the normal inspection and verification mechanism. He said this situation was later used as justification for the decision adopted by the IAEA Board of Governors.
Describing the approach taken by the Board of Governors as a “fabrication,” Garibabadi said policies pursued and actions carried out through such fabrications could not remedy their failure. He also said no result would be achieved at the United Nations Security Council.
Iran’s nuclear file to be referred to UN bodies
The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution providing for Iran’s nuclear file to be sent to the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly on the grounds that the country had failed to provide the necessary information and access regarding its nuclear activities.
The United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States submitted the draft resolution. The draft is based on allegations that Iran failed to comply with its nuclear reporting obligations. The adopted resolution means that Iran will be referred to the UN Security Council for the first time in 20 years.
The resolution is considered largely symbolic. China and Russia, which are among Iran’s allies, are two of the three countries that voted against it and have the power to veto sanctions against Tehran at the UN Security Council.
