Activists in Greece demonstrated while raising Palestinian flags to protest the possible presence of Israeli defense companies at Lavrio port, southeast of the capital Athens.
The protesters marched through the port area carrying signs expressing solidarity with Palestine and rejecting the possibility of Israeli military companies gaining a foothold at the port.

The port privatization deal
The protest comes amid a privatization process led by Greece’s state-owned Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund to sell a majority stake in the Lavrio Port Authority. Israel Shipyards, which specializes in building military and civilian vessels, was among the groups qualified to compete for the stake.
Media reports in June 2025 said the Israeli company had submitted a bid to acquire 51% of the port’s operating company, accompanied by a bank guarantee worth 5 million euros. Other consortia, including one involving the cruise company MSC, also competed for the deal.
Underwater military trials
An investigation published by the Mediterranean Institute for Investigative Journalism revealed that Lavrio port hosted field trials from March 16 to 20, 2026, as part of the European UNDERSEA project for underwater monitoring, funded with 6 million euros by the Horizon Europe program.
According to the investigation, the project consortium includes Israel’s Ministry of Defense, state-owned defense company Rafael and Tel Aviv University. The trials were conducted without informing local residents and in a protected area within the Natura 2000 environmental network.
Greek ports at the center of protests
The protest follows a 24-hour strike called by the Greek seafarers’ union at several ports, including Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, coinciding with an international day of action in which workers at 113 ports around the world took part to oppose the transport of military shipments.
Greece has witnessed repeated pro-Palestinian protests since the war on Gaza began, some of which targeted the docking of Israeli cruise ships at the country’s ports.
