Riots broke out in Bilbao in Spain’s northern Basque Country on Monday evening after protests over an event that far-right commentator Vito Quiles planned to hold near the University of Deusto.
Quiles announced the event’s cancellation in the afternoon after consulting the regional police, the Ertzaintza, over the possibility of unrest. The university suspended its academic activities and closed its facilities.
Cars and rubbish bins set on fire
The unrest began at around 7 p.m. near the campus after a gathering called by student and anti-fascist groups dispersed. Rubbish bins were set on fire before clashes spread to nearby streets. At least six cars were burned, a municipal police motorcycle was used as a barrier, and shops and public facilities were damaged. Possible looting is under investigation.

19 arrested, including minors
Ertzaintza police arrested 19 people, including seven minors. The oldest was no more than 22 years old, and three others are being investigated on suspicion of disturbing public order.
The Security Department of the Basque government condemned the riots, saying the participants had acted according to a prearranged plan and that a group had thrown stones at a police station in the Deusto district.
The events in Bilbao came two days after riots in Barcelona that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described as “pure vandalism,” ahead of the general election scheduled for November 29.
