The future of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip has come under renewed scrutiny after an airstrike on a police station in central Gaza City killed eight security personnel and a displaced child.
Hamas Political Bureau Chairman Khalil al-Hayya called on Wednesday for an end to Israeli attacks that he said threatened the implementation of the ceasefire. Al-Hayya said the attack placed a major responsibility on the mediators and guarantors to ensure the agreement was implemented and upheld.
The Hamas official called on the mediators and guarantors to pressure Israel to halt the attacks and take action to prevent the ceasefire agreement from collapsing. Al-Hayya argued that the continued attacks showed that mediation efforts and the guarantees provided for the ceasefire were being disregarded.
Islamic Jihad describes attack as a war crime
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement condemned the targeting of the police station in Gaza City and described the attack as a war crime. The movement said the attack showed that the fighting in Gaza was continuing.
Islamic Jihad also argued that the attack dealt a blow to mediation efforts and initiatives by Arab and international actors. The movement held the US administration responsible for the ceasefire violations because of the political and military support it provided to the Israeli government.
Two attacks in 24 hours
Gaza's Interior Ministry announced that eight security personnel and a displaced child were killed in Wednesday's attack. The airstrike targeted a police station in central Gaza City.
The attack was the second Israeli attack in Gaza within 24 hours. On Tuesday, seven Palestinians were killed and 14 injured in a drone strike on a crowded cafe at the Fishermen's Port in western Gaza City.
Dispute continues over second phase of ceasefire
These developments came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the road map for the second phase of the Gaza agreement, published on July 31. The road map calls for Hamas to be disarmed and for Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza gradually and simultaneously.
Netanyahu wants Hamas to be completely disarmed before Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza. Hamas says disarmament must take place simultaneously with Israel's orderly and gradual withdrawal from the area.
Mediators continue their efforts to complete implementation of the ceasefire agreement, which has been in effect since October 10, 2025. According to Gaza Health Ministry data, 1,273 Palestinians have been killed and 4,223 injured in ceasefire violations.
More than 73,000 Palestinians have also been killed in Gaza since October 8, 2023, more than 174,000 have been injured, and approximately 90 percent of the infrastructure has been damaged.
