Iranian Army Commander-in-Chief Amir Hatami claimed that maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz is very limited and that Iran has full control over the strait.
Hatami made the remarks on ship transits through the strait at an event he attended in the capital Tehran on Friday. He claimed that statements saying the strait is open do not reflect reality.
Claim of control over different parts of the strait
The Iranian commander said the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps control the western part of the Strait of Hormuz, while the Iranian army’s naval forces are responsible for the area from the eastern part toward the Sea of Oman.

“We have full control over the strait. To date, no enemy ship has dared to enter the Sea of Oman. Three ships that tried to pass were attacked one after another,” Hatami said.
Claims of mines and attacks on ships
Hatami also claimed that many ships trying to pass through the strait without coordinating with Iran had hit mines or been targeted. He said Iran was maintaining its position on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

Talks collapsed after the conflict
After the conflict between the US, Israel and Iran that began on Feb. 28, Tehran launched attacks on Israel and on some US facilities in Arab countries.
Negotiations began after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18. However, the talks collapsed over disagreements on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
