The war powers bill aimed at stopping attacks on Iran passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 220-204.
The bill, introduced by Democratic Representative Seth Moulton, calls for Trump to be directed to withdraw military forces from the region.
Seven of the 220 votes in favor of the bill came from Republican members of the House of Representatives.
Meeks calls for diplomacy to end the tensions
Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Gregory Meeks said in a written statement that the Trump administration had failed to achieve the objectives it announced during nearly 200 days of ongoing tensions.
Criticizing fuel prices, inflation and rising government spending, Meeks said this was the third War Powers Resolution adopted by Congress to end the war.
Meeks said the U.S. president should end the war and work multilaterally toward a diplomatic solution that would ease tensions by reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He also called for diplomats, rather than real estate developers, to be assigned to the process.
