Iran’s Foreign Ministry called for restrictions on flights between Iran and Iraq to be lifted and for the two countries’ airlines to resume services so air travel between them can return to normal.
In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said it respected Iraq’s national sovereignty and called for “appropriate decisions” to be taken to end the current restrictions.
Hundreds of thousands of passengers affected
Iran’s Foreign Ministry argued that the restrictions on air transportation were incompatible with the interests of Iran and Iraq. The statement said the measures had created serious difficulties for hundreds of thousands of passengers, including pilgrims, patients, students and businesspeople.

The ministry said relations between the two countries were based on strong historical, religious, cultural and people-to-people ties. It said transportation links should be managed independently, responsibly and with a forward-looking approach, while taking mutual interests into account.

Tehran accuses US of imposing sanctions
Iran’s Foreign Ministry alleged that the United States had disrupted Iran’s trade and air links with other countries through sanctions and “economic terrorism.”
US sanctions imposed on Iran for many years include measures affecting the aviation sector and transactions with Iranian entities. Washington says the sanctions are intended to limit the revenues and resources accessible to the Iranian government, while Tehran argues that they disrupt ordinary economic and transportation links.
