Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi called on Iran and the United States to resolve their ongoing disputes and develop understandings that could provide a lasting political way forward at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Albusaidi said Oman would continue protecting transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Albusaidi said the conflict that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran earlier this year threatened regional security. The Omani minister said disruptions to maritime transport and trade along the strategic waterway were affecting energy security, prices and confidence in the international system.
Albusaidi said Oman was committed to protecting navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and called for the interests of countries that rely on the passage to be respected. He also urged all parties to cooperate with Muscat to ensure the security of these passages.
Albusaidi also said Oman stood in solidarity with neighboring countries as they took steps to protect their security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Reiterating his call for a political solution in Yemen, the Omani foreign minister said the parties should work toward an agreement that would preserve the country's unity, stability and territorial integrity. He said such an arrangement should safeguard Yemen's sovereignty and its relations with neighboring countries.
