The ruling handed down by the Karaj Revolutionary Court was carried out against Shahram Sadeghi in Iran in the morning. Sadeghi had been accused of acting on behalf of the US and Israel and working against Iran’s security and national interests.
The charges against Sadeghi also included an allegation that he struck seven police officers with his vehicle during the protests, causing injuries.
Protests began over economic problems
Protests in Iran began at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar on December 28, 2025. The demonstrations emerged after merchants reacted to the rapid depreciation of the national currency against foreign currencies and worsening economic problems.
The demonstrations soon spread across the country. Protests in Tehran turned into violent clashes on January 8, after which Iranian authorities restricted internet access.

Figures on the protests differ
Iranian officials did not disclose the total number of people killed and injured in the events.
The US-based Iran Human Rights News Agency reported that 5,858 people were killed and 41,283 were detained during the protests.
The forensic medicine unit of Iran’s Martyrs and Veterans Foundation announced on January 21 that 3,117 people, including security personnel and civilians, had been killed in the protests. The statement said that 2,427 of them were security personnel and civilians killed by armed terrorist groups, while no information was provided about the deaths of 690 people.
