Within the framework of rising tensions in the Middle East, a warning was made that Iran may assign its supporter Houthis in Yemen to block a critical maritime passage in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in response to the naval blockade planned by the US in the Strait of Hormuz. Bab el-Mandeb stands out as a strategic point connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, through which about 12% of global oil shipments pass. This strait is of great importance in energy and trade flow as one of the important trade corridors between Asia and Europe.
The US Central Command announced that the naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would begin on Monday, while Ali Akbar Velayati, one of Iran's senior advisors, stated that the Bab el-Mandeb Strait also has strategic importance like Hormuz. It is expressed that Iran may increase tensions in the region by using this strategic point. Experts emphasize that the possibility of Iran expanding the conflict to the Red Sea through the Houthis could lead to serious fluctuations in global energy markets.
While the Houthis pose threats to US assets in the region, US maritime warnings indicate that the Houthis may use various attack methods against commercial ships. These developments point to the possibility of further escalation of the existing tension in the Middle East.
