Narcotics teams at Istanbul Airport found drugs in the stomach of a passenger they stopped due to suspicious behavior. The 51-year-old individual, who had arrived from Iran and was about to exit Turkey, was caught with a total of 26 capsules in his stomach and intestines during a detailed search.
The capsules contained methamphetamine, known as 'ice', and the total weight was recorded as 380 grams. A medical evaluation determined that 13 of the capsules could be expelled naturally, while the remaining 13 posed a risk of bursting and intestinal blockage. The suspect was therefore taken into emergency surgery and the capsules were successfully removed.
Only 20,000 lira for a life-threatening risk
In his statement, the Iranian suspect said he was to receive only 20,000 Turkish lira (approximately $420) for transporting the drugs. Police sources reported that the street value of the seized 380 grams of methamphetamine exceeded $40,000. This stark contrast drew widespread reaction on social media.
Users expressed shock and outrage that a person would risk their life for such a low amount. One user commented, "He endangered his life for just 20,000 lira. Drug networks see couriers as mere tools." Another pointed out the importance of the police noticing the suspect's suspicious gait.
Faces up to 45 years in prison
After his health improved, the suspect was referred to the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and remanded in custody by the court. The individual, who will be tried for drug trafficking under Article 188 of the Turkish Penal Code, is expected to face up to 45 years in prison.
