Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said decisions reached during his visit to Beijing could have immeasurable consequences for the future strategic balances in the Middle East and Gulf regions.
Speaking on Thursday after an official visit that began in the Chinese capital on Wednesday, Araghchi said the decisions would shape regional balances. He did not provide details about the nature or specifics of the decisions reached during the visit.
Emphasis on strategic partnership with Beijing
Describing Iran's consultations with China as successful, Araghchi said they valued the strategic partnership built between the two countries over time.
Araghchi also referred to the four principles for peace put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping. He listed them as national sovereignty, respect for international law, balancing security and development, and peaceful coexistence.
The Iranian minister said these principles were of central importance to achieving peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf regions.
Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz
Araghchi's visit to China came as tensions between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz were rising. The agreement signed in June provided for reopening the strategic waterway and laying the groundwork for a broader peace agreement.
In February, the United States and Israel carried out large-scale attacks targeting government buildings, military facilities, missile infrastructure and air defense systems in Iran. Iran also carried out missile and drone attacks against Israel and U.S. bases in the region.
Diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities between the parties have continued after the conflict spread across the region.
