Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is expected to travel to Iraq on Wednesday and discuss regional developments and Tehran-Baghdad relations with Iraqi officials.
Security and cooperation priorities
The planned talks are expected to address strengthening strategic cooperation between Iran and Iraq and assessing joint steps that could contribute to stability and security in West Asia.
Developing relations between the two countries, border security, counterterrorism, expanding economic cooperation and implementing previously signed agreements will also be among the subjects of the talks.
Diplomatic development ahead of the visit
Ghalibaf, who has served as Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States, is expected to visit Iraq days after a drone attack targeted the residence and private office of Masrour Barzani, president of the Kurdistan Regional Government, in northern Iraq.
Following the attack, Baghdad requested an official statement from Tehran. Iran denied claims that it was involved in the attack and condemned the incident.
