Iranian Vice President Mohammad Jafar Qaem Panah said in a statement on Sunday that the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) poses a security risk in the country.
In remarks cited by Iran’s official news agency IRNA, Qaem Panah claimed that VPN networks facilitate the enemy’s infiltration of the country and espionage activities. He said reports prepared by security officials had also concluded that VPN use facilitates such activities.
Qaem Panah also said that some groups in Iran make illicit profits from VPN sales. He stated that these people earn about 12 trillion tomans, or $64 million, a year from such sales.
Internet restrictions in Iran
Iranian authorities have imposed restrictions on internet use following popular protests that began on December 28.
The protests began after merchants at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar protested the Iranian rial’s depreciation against foreign currencies and worsening economic conditions, marking the start of the period during which internet restrictions were imposed.
