Iraq’s Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced that three of the five groups that agreed to lay down their arms had handed over their weapons as part of efforts to strengthen state authority.
Speaking at a meeting with tribal leaders and elders, al-Zaidi said dialogue with the remaining groups was continuing. He said the government was continuing its efforts to prevent any group from weakening state authority.
Al-Zaidi said the government was responsible for Iraqi lives and identified protecting people’s lives and strengthening state institutions among the government’s main priorities.
Emphasizing that Iraq’s decisions must remain in the hands of Iraqis, al-Zaidi thanked the tribal leaders who contributed to maintaining stability during periods of turmoil.
The Baghdad administration is continuing its efforts to bring weapons outside state control under government authority following the end of the U.S.-led international coalition’s military mission in Iraq at the end of September.
The government is also working to protect Iraq from regional conflicts. Al-Zaidi said national unity and independent decision-making were decisive for the country’s stability.
