In a written statement issued as the conflict in Gaza entered its third year, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said a path toward a lasting ceasefire and peace must be established in the region.
Guterres said the attacks that began in October 2023 must not be repeated, adding that the conflict that followed had inflicted immense suffering on Palestinians in Gaza. He said this suffering included loss of life, displacement and destruction, and noted that Palestinian civilians continued to face unbearable conditions.
Guterres said the ceasefire implemented last year had provided some relief but had not guaranteed security, sufficient humanitarian aid or a credible path to recovery and peace.
Calling on all parties to fully honor their commitments and move to the next phase of the ceasefire, Guterres stressed the need to make the ceasefire permanent, allow large-scale humanitarian aid to reach Gaza and comply with international law.
Guterres said a political path leading to lasting peace in the region must be built and stated that the United Nations would continue to remain committed to these goals.
Guterres said there was a need for a future in which Israelis and Palestinians could live side by side in peace and security, with their rights, dignity and aspirations fulfilled. He said the anniversary of the conflict should renew the determination to build a different future.
