A playground in Khirbet Umm al-Khair, in the Masafer Yatta area south of Hebron in the occupied West Bank, was declared a closed military zone by Israeli soldiers and police on Saturday.
Activist Ahmed al-Hathaleen said Israeli settlers had attacked children and journalists at the site, including foreign journalists. Al-Hathaleen said the soldiers and police then removed the children, journalists, residents and activists from the playground.
Children barred from entering the site
Israeli forces continued their deployment at the playground and barred children from entering the site. The area has existed for many years and is described as the only open-air recreational space available to children in the community.
The playground, which was recently renovated and equipped with various facilities, is the place where activist Odeh al-Hathaleen was killed a year ago, according to al-Hathaleen. The activist said Israeli settlers and forces had attacked the site repeatedly in the past.
Demolition order issued for the land
The Israeli Civil Administration issued a demolition order in January for the land where the playground is located. The stated reason for the decision was that the site had been built in Area C under the Oslo Accords.
Ahmed al-Hathaleen said the land belonged to a family from the community and that the family had documents proving ownership.
Division of the West Bank
The 1995 Oslo II Accord divided the West Bank into Areas A, B and C. Area A was placed under Palestinian administration, Area B under Palestinian civil administration and Israeli security control, and Area C under full Israeli control.
The division of Area C, which accounts for approximately 60 percent of the West Bank, was intended to be temporary until a final agreement was reached.
