Israeli President Isaac Herzog criticized the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to South African jurist Navi Pillay. Herzog called the Nobel Committee’s decision “a derisive decision.”
Herzog also argued that the actions carried out by the Israeli army in Gaza did not constitute “genocide.” Opposing Pillay’s assessment that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, Herzog cited this view among the reasons for his criticism of the award decision.
Pillay’s work on international law
Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote peace and international law.

The South African jurist chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory until November 2025. In response to criticism of the commission’s open-ended mandate, Pillay said, “The Israeli occupation has no end date either.”
After the commission concluded in September 2025 that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza, Pillay called on the international community to halt arms sales, ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid and prevent genocide through diplomacy.
Pillay serves as a judge at the International Court of Justice in the case in which Myanmar is accused of genocide.
